The Oregon Senate passed House Bill 2427, largely banning the growing of canola in the Willamette Valley until January 2019.

The bill now heads to the governor.

Supporters said the legislation was needed to protect Oregon’s growing specialty crop industry from cross-contamination with canola.

Opponents said the matter should be left to the Department of Agriculture to decide and that the Legislature was overstepping its authority in regulating what crops farmers should grow.
