Lane County’s jobless rate fell to 7.8% in May, down a full percentage point from a year ago.
It was the first time the seasonally adjusted rate had dipped below 8 percent in more than four years. The last time it did so was back in September 2008 when the rate was 7.6 percent, said Brian Rooney, a labor economist with the department.
The improvement in the unemployment rate is the result of fairly broad-based gains in the private sector, he said.
