The Portland area has an unusually high concentration of science and technology jobs, an Oregon Employment Department report says.

Wages in that field are slightly lower in Portland than in other areas, according to the report, which concludes that’s not surprising given extremely high salaries paid in the Silicon Valley and other tech hotspots.

State labor economist Amy Vander Vliet examined jobs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (collectively known as STEM) in the nation’s 50 largest metro areas. The ratio of STEM jobs in the metro area was the 13th highest.

“Despite our reputation as a haven for slackers with under-utilized college degrees, Portland actually has a significantly higher concentration of STEM employment relative to the nation,” Vander Vliet wrote.
