2,300 eligible Precision Castparts workers will vote tomorrow and Friday on whether to unionize.
It will be Oregon’s biggest private-sector unionization vote in more than 30 years.
Precision Castparts management appears alarmed as the landmark vote approaches involving 12 plants that make complex, critical parts for Boeing planes, Rolls-Royce engines and other industrial products. Union representatives see Precision as a big potential prize, rare as U.S. manufacturing moves offshore and as organized labor’s numbers and reputation decline nationally.
The company has flown in executives from union-staffed subsidiaries — 22 percent of Precision’s 28,500 employees worldwide are organized — to describe the woes of strikes, work stoppages and concessions.
