Portland nonprofit Zenger Farm plans to break ground on an “urban grange.”

“Rural granges have been that gathering place for communities for ages, from square dances to farm business,” Zenger Farm Executive Director Jill Kuehler says. “People assume an urban community has plenty of those opportunities built-in, and I just don’t think that’s true.”

With help from DECA Architects, Zenger organizers have drafted plans for a building with classrooms where neighborhood groups can hold evening meetings, an industrial kitchen to teach healthful cooking classes and rent out to budding food entrepreneurs, and basement cold storage, enabling Zenger to add other farmers’ meat and dairy to its CSA baskets.
