Despite voters rejecting a new city fee, Eugene councilors say they will consider all options before eliminating all the programs and staff originally proposed in response to the fee’s failure.
[City Manager Jon] Ruiz’s list includes dropping a fire engine crew at the Whiteaker station, closing the Bethel and Sheldon branch libraries, shutting Sheldon Pool, closing the downtown library one day a week, trimming police investigations, eliminating one of the vans that responds to alcohol and mental health problems, and reducing funding for social services and other city services.
When the council in February voted to put the household and business fee proposal on Tuesday’s ballot, some councilors said that if it failed they would have no choice but to cut the programs on the list.
A day after the measure’s lopsided defeat, however, some of those councilors said that not everything may have to go.
