Intel chose COO Brian Krzanich as new CEO to replace Paul Otellini.

While Krzanich works at Intel’s Santa Clara headquarters, the company also appointed a president this morning – vice president Renee James, 48, who runs the company’s software group from its offices in Hillsboro. She had been considered a longshot candidate to become CEO. James will continue to split her time between Oregon and California.

Intel’s executive chairman, Andy Bryant, ran the CEO selection process from his office in Hillsboro. The company said it would consider outside candidates, but both Bryant and Otellini had said they expected to choose a new CEO inside the company. The prolonged search led some to believe Intel’s board might be leaning to an outsider for the first time in the company’s history.
