Portland Mayor Charlie Hales decided to extend street closures in Old Town for another 60 days.

For the past three months, city officials have closed the Old Town Chinatown district to cars on Fridays and Saturdays between the hours of 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. Thousands of drinkers spend their weekends in the area, which is home to a number of bars and night clubs.

The City Council had hoped that by closing the six-block chunk of downtown, fewer accidents would occur.
