That’s unnerved some investors and analysts, who note that Intel is facing some urgent challenges. PC sales are flat, and the company hasn’t had any meaningful success breaking into the exploding market for mobile chips.

Intel appears to be contemplating turning over a significant portion of its factories to make chips using other companies’ designs. And it’s preparing its biggest foray ever into consumer electronics, readying its own set-top box to challenge the cable TV operators.
