Oregon City eyes change


While reactions are mixed, large efforts are being made to revitalize downtown Oregon City.

Oregon City is hoping a revamped downtown will increase foot traffic and boost business.

But one challenge is next year’s closure of the Arch Bridge, which brings thousands of cars into the city every day. The changes being proposed to compensate for the closure could face backlash.

“As downtown evolves with more businesses, we have to ask if our current downtown meets our future needs,” Downtown Manager Lloyd Purdy said. “It has been a long time since we thought about these issues.”

But road improvements require an investment from the city, and Smith said the city has seen backlash from residents for projects far smaller than a reconstruction of Main Street.
