Coos County seeks timber cash


Timber receipt payments from BLM will stop in two years, but the county hopes for more.

The Bureau of Land Management has issued $5.5 million in timber receipt payments to Coos County. The payments have decreased each year and are set to end in two years.

The county is lobbying Congress to get the act reinstated. But what if the payments aren’t reauthorized?

“We’ve been aggressive with our budget cuts in case this does happen,” County Commissioner Kevin Stufflebean said.

In 2007, the county cut staff. Stufflebean said if commissioners make further cuts in the next few years it probably would be to staffing again, but to a much lesser degree.
