Oregon small farmers rally against the Senate’s new food safety bill, saying it hurts local producers.

The bill would rewrite food safety laws and increase regulation on all farms regardless of their size. Farmers throughout the state feel the added burdens will make it impossible for them to compete.

“It will mean that small producers that sell direct to consumers will have to go through the same regulations as Smith Foods,” Andrea Malmberg, the director of Oregon Rural Action, told the East Oregonian. “It’s a one-size-fits-all regulatory mechanism for food facilities.”
