With Oregon’s next gubernatorial primary just over a year away, state Republicans are searching for a way to revive the party.
“This is not simply the case of a couple of bad elections,” said former state Labor Commissioner Jack Roberts. “We’re clearly on a wrong trend and we need to think about what to do about that.” Roberts, who ran for governor in 2002 and was one of the last Republicans to win a statewide election, led a soul-searching discussion Sunday morning among party activists about how to restore the once-successful Republican brand Oregon.
About he only thing that seemed to get broad agreement was that Republicans need to figure out how to avoid tearing each other apart over their doctrinal differences and get back to Ronald Reagan’s vision of a “big tent” party.
