Oregon’s unemployment rate in January was 8.4%, as the private sector added 5,000 jobs but the public sector cut 800.

State officials said the jobs picture was a little brighter during the past three years, with slow and steady job growth. Adjusted data show that for 2011, the state added 2,100 jobs. In 2012, the state added about 6,500 jobs.

During the past 3½ years, Oregon’s unemployment rate has gradually declined from a high of 11.6 in May and June 2009.
