Headwaters Farm east of Gresham is to become the state’s first incubator farm to help people wanting to start their own farms gain experience.

It is owned by the East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District, which last May paid $1.5 million for 61 acres of the Schaeffer Nursery to turn it into a testing ground for future farmers.

The goal of the incubator is to create the next generation of farmers by giving them a chance to work and learn on a small scale and then move them on to their own, larger pieces of land.
