Portland Meadows’ latest season saw an influx of new customers by changing its racing season from winter weekdays to summer weekends, but it failed to revive the track.

Combine the weather with an omnipresent ad campaign and tens of thousands of dollars in improvements — dozens of new flat-screen televisions, the spacious bar hewn from old barn wood, a fresh parking lot and refined fare, among them — and of course the new summer season would revive the old track.

Except it hasn’t.

By many measures, the racing season that began July 15 was Portland Meadows’ worst in years. Attendance and food sales rose, sure, but the change was not a formula for success in the waging world, and overall bets were way down.
