Portland meat distributor Nicky USA acquired a 31-acre farm in Aurora to begin raising its own meat.

The company said the new farm, located along the Pudding River, will be used to raise rabbits, game birds and other “unique animals” using humane and sustainable practices. The farm is currently home to wild geese, quail, a century-old farm house and a barn the company said bears a resemblance to the one in its corporate logo.

The move brings owner Geoff Latham back to his roots as a farmer and establishes Nicky USA as the only meat distributor and butcher in the Northwest that also raises meat. The first product of the farm will be rabbit, which Latham first began selling back in 1991, a product that helped the company develop relationships with Portland chefs.
