Supporters of the legislation say it would simply preserve existing tax policies without costing an extra dime, while enticing Oregon’s premier company to a major expansion in its home state. Opponents decry the legislation as corporate welfare and have planned two protests — one in Portland tonight, one in Salem Friday morning — against the deal.
This morning’s hearing comes just a day before a special legislative session, called Monday by Gov. John Kitzhaber, will consider the deal. Kitzhaber said the Washington County giant needs greater tax certainty before spending at least $150 million and creating at least 500 jobs in Oregon.
