Oregon won a $20 million federal grant to improve the way it prepares young children for kindergarten.

Gov. John Kitzhaber announced the win Thursday morning, calling it “a welcome endorsement of Oregon’s focus on improving early learning and school readiness.”

Oregon had hoped to win $50 million in the first round. Instead, it won $20 million on its second attempt. Its success was based in large part on the governor’s attempts to bring new coherence and coordination to what has been a fractured, hard-to-navigate system to help young children and their families.
