The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission will vote in Portland on a package of proposals to phase out non-tribal commercial gillnets.

The report calls for a four-year transition from gill and tangle nets on the Columbia to using those nets in off-channel areas, as well as beach and purse seines as well as other “alternative gear” in the main channel by commercial anglers by 2017.

During the transition, increased releases of fish would be ramped up in the off-channel areas, and the sport fishing share of the allowed take on the Columbia would rise incrementally.
