Banks City Manager Kyle Awesome quit abruptly, after local newspaper the Forest Grove Leader raised questions about his background and resume.

Awesome said he was taking an undisclosed job at the White House, but refused to provide a name or contact number for verification.

[City recorder Jolynn] Becker said the city relied on a background check from the League of Oregon Cities before hiring Awesome, who was paid $65,000 annually. Jennie Messmer, member services director at the League, confirmed the background check but couldn’t determine what it found.

Born Franklin Kyle Hayes, Awesome said he legally changed his last name in 2010 after realizing how incredible it was to survive two wars.

Awesome’s résumé states that he earned a doctorate in 2010 in presidential politics from Georgetown University. However, Audrey Ramey, information specialist in the university registrar’s office, said no one was ever registered under any combination of his names in conjunction with his date of birth. Additional searches at Georgetown found a Franklin Hayes but with a different middle name, different date of birth and a different degree.
