St. Charles Health System is launching a campaign to keep noise levels down at its Central Oregon hospitals.
Research shows that controlling sound can lead to better health in patients.
[Nancy Simonson, who manages orthopedics and neurosciences unit at St. Charles, Bend] says nationwide, hospital patients complain twice as often about noise than they do any other part of their stay. As a result, she says over the last few months, the hospital has done things like replace wheels on noisy equipment carts, and adjust fire doors to keep them from slamming shut.
But Simonson says a large part of the campaign centers on helping staff and visitors to be more aware of the noise they might be making.
