Oregon developer and philanthropist John D. Gray died Friday in Portland at 93.

Gray was known for developing some of the state’s most prominent resorts, as well as redeveloping the John’s Landing district in Southwest Portland. Later in life, he became known regionally for his philanthropic efforts.

In the 1960s he turned to developing resorts, including the Salishan resort on the Oregon Coast.

“Oregon really didn’t have true destination resorts,” said Nick Allis, who was president of Grayco Resources, Gray’s firm. “He loved the Oregon coast. He saw this land, which was originally a dairy, as an opportunity to create an Oregon resort on the coast of real quality.”
