A vegan BLT made by Portland’s DC Vegetarian food cart was named No. 1 in the nation by People for Ethical Treatment of Animals.

“DC Vegetarian proves every day that a delicious BLT doesn’t have to cost a pig ‘an arm and a leg,’ ” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “All our picks are winners because they’re leading the charge to satisfy America’s growing hunger for humane, healthy and Earth-friendly foods.”

DC Vegetarian is at the corner of Southwest Third Avenue between Stark and Washington streets. Its BLT is made with crispy tempeh (from soy) bacon, lettuce and tomato piled between two slices of bread or prepared as a sub sandwich. It’s dairy- and meat-free, even with two kinds of vegan cheese.
