Portland Commissioner Nick Fish says that he doesn’t want Mayor Sam Adams to rush a new plan for the Oregon Sustainability Center through the City Council.
That’s because the mayor leaves office in about three months, and the new mayor — either Charlie Hales or Jefferson Smith, both of whom have expressed doubts about the project — will be joined by Commissioner-elect Steve Novick, who has also raised questions about the center. Commissioner Amanda Fritz, who’s up for re-election in November, has opposed the project. Rival Mary Nolan supports it, she said.
Taken together, it wouldn’t be good policy to approve a massive construction project — estimated to cost $47 million, down from $62 million last year — just as two or three new people prepare to join the Portland City Council in January, Fish said.
“I think this project is something for the next council to decide,” Fish said.
