Portland’s City Council voted unanimously to fluoridate the city’s water supply.

Councilors said they considered the arguments from critics and supporters and concluded that fluoridation would improve the dental health of children and other residents who rely on the city’s water from the Bull Run Reservoir.

Immediately following the council’s decision, clean water advocates announced plans to launch a citizen referendum that would put the fluoridation question to Portland voters.
