The percentage of Oregon households that suffer from hunger declined slightly.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Wednesday said that 5.9 percent of Oregon households suffered from hunger between January 2009 and December 2011, a decrease from the 6.1 percent mark in the 2008-10 period.

“What’s important to recognize is the decline is very small. I prefer to think of it as it held its own, and didn’t really change,” said Mark Edwards, an associate professor of sociology at OSU’s School of Public Policy. “We managed to stay where we were in spite of the recession.”
