The do-it-yourself industry is recovering as part of a rebounding home improvement market.

“After three years of recession-driven declines, consumer expenditures on home improvement supplies picked up in 2010, and growth accelerated in 2011 amid signs of economic recovery,” Mintel Group said in its latest report on the DIY industry. In 2011, DIY home improvement sales in the United States hit $11.7 billion, the market research firm said, although it added that this was 10 percent below the industry’s pre-recession peak in 2006.

Mintel said that it expects the do-it-yourself market to continue to grow as the economy strengthens, reaching a total of about $14 billion in sales in 2016.
