FEI pays $15 million to settle patent battle

FEI Co., the Hillsboro-based maker of high-end electron microscopes, has had strong sales growth in recent quarters, but was locked in a patent dispute with Hitachi High-Technologies Corp.

FEI Co. said Monday that it has settled a dispute with Hitachi High-Technologies Corp. and will pay HHT $15 million to license patents related to “focused ion beam systems” and resolve the issue.

It had previously recorded charges totaling $5.4 million related to pending claims from its dispute with HHT. It said it will record the additional $9.6 million as prepaid royalties over approximately seven years. The two companies said they will now cross-license the relevant patents.
