The second debate in the run-off election for Portland mayor focuses on the city’s growing software industry.

During the primary election, both former City Commissioner Charlie Hales and state Rep. Jefferson Smith promised to support small businesses if elected mayor. This will be the first opportunity for them to detail their platforms and challenge each other in the general election.

Software development is one of the industry clusters indentified as ripe for growth in the economic development strategy approved by the City Council. Topics to be discussed include what leadership the next mayor will provide to nurture the software industry and the broader local entrepreneurial culture.
