Foster Farms Dairy is closing the Deluxe Ice Cream factory in Salem, resulting in about 100 layoffs.
Modernizing the plant would cost millions of dollars. The plant’s location on 1860 State Street, near downtown and surrounded by homes, made future expansion impractical, company officials said.
Layoffs of about 75 full-time employees and 25 seasonal workers will begin in the fall, [spokesman John] Segale said.
