Efforts to remove a giant dock from Agate Beach have run into snags, because the dock is much heavier than anticipated.

Ballard Diving and Salvage was hired by the state to remove the dock from the beach north of Newport. Ballard and its subcontractors on Tuesday set up a crane that can lift up to 100 tons, roped off the area to keep onlookers at a safe distance, and dug out the sand from around the dock.

Crews were continuing to work until dark Thursday, and will spend today using a wire saw to cut up the dock, parks officials said. They said the workers expect to finish cleaning the site on Saturday, a day later than planned.
