Republican Secretary of State candidate Knute Buehler said he won’t become a member of the Public Employee Retirement System if he is elected.

Oregon needs to remove the conflict of interest state officials have concerning PERS, Buehler said Thursday during a press conference where he laid out proposals for reforming the public employees retirement system as well as beefing up the Secretary of State’s audits muscle.

Buehler, a Bend physician, acknowledged that the Secretary of State has no authority under the law to execute PERS reforms. But he said he can decline to benefit and he can advocate for reforms.
