With Congress struggling to pass the farm bill, the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is under scrutiny.

The program helps one in five people in Oregon.

Earlier this year, Republicans endorsed a budget that called for $33 billion in SNAP cuts. Human services advocates argue that would be devastating, especially given the sluggish economic recovery.

While Congress argues, the program continues to grow. Last month, Oregon set another record, with 814,460 individuals receiving food stamps, up 35,500 from June 2011. The numbers have grown each month since 2008 but state officials are hoping enrollment will peak this summer before finally starting to drop.
