Specialty manufacturing is a bright spot in the Portland area’s recovering economy.

Nearly 20 percent of Oregon’s gross state product comes from manufacturing, making us second only to Indiana in the economic influence of manufacturing, said Chris Scherer, executive director of the Oregon Manufacturing Extension Partnership, a private non-profit consulting group.

The state, especially the Portland area, is particularly strong in metals fabrication and machining work, he said. Firms that cut, bend and weld steel for other industrial uses have found plenty of work, Scherer said.
