Salem and the rest of Oregon is lagging behind the Portland area in its recovery from the recession.

For Salem, the lag is due mostly to its reliance on state government as the area’s main employer.

Economic recovery is well under way in Portland, the Columbia Gorge area, the northern Coast and northeast Oregon, McMullen said. Portland benefits from its diverse job base, while the areas along the river benefit from agriculture and from their proximity to Washington.

But recovery is slow-to-nonexistent in the Willamette Valley, Southern Oregon and Eastern Oregon.
