Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said the new plan will save the mail agency half a billion dollars each year while addressing concerns of rural residents most opposed to post office closings.
Under the emerging strategy, no post office would be closed. But more than 13,000 rural mail facilities could see reduced operations of between two and six hours.
Previously, up to 3,700 low-revenue post offices were slated for closure or consolidation beginning sometime after May 15, many in rural areas. In Oregon, the plan called for 20 rural post offices to close as well as processing centers in Salem, Bend, Eugene and Pendleton.
