Entrepreneurs Jeff Bergadine and Michael Deal are making over condiments, starting with Portland Ketchup Company, the first product from Portlandia Foods.

 

Portland Ketchup Company got its big break in October 2011 when McMenamins’ restaurants agreed to stock the ketchup.

They have an uphill battle in front of them, though. Because they cannot make ketchup in the same volume as a company like Heinz, Portlandia Foods’ ketchup is still about twice as expensive, with a 23-pound plastic bag of the product selling for $27 to $30. The company puts ketchup in bags to sell in bulk to restaurants.

“It’s hard to compete with genetically modified tomatoes,” Deal says.
