Portland’s Miller Paint will double its Puget Sound stores with the acquisition of 10 Kelly-Moore Paint stores.

The deal gives the Northeast Portland paint brand 17 stores in the region, and boosts its total store count to 49. It plans to shutter one Kent, Wash., shop and operate the remaining nine Kelly-Moore Paints stores under its own brand. 

Paint sales in the Pacific Northwest typically pick up in late spring as buyers prepare for the dry summer season. The timing of the acquisition makes sense for Miller Paint, as the 122-year-old firm rebounds from the economic downturn, [Miller Paint Chief Executive Steve] Dearborn said. The company noticed a sales turnaround in June 2011 and has continued to make gains since, he said.
