Manufacturing plants rebounding from recession

Two Prineville manufacturing facilities, Woodgrain Millwork and Contact Industries, adapted during the recession to keep their doors open.

Although they cut dozens of employees during the recession, they have seen business improvements during the past year.

According to Bob Horton, the vice president of manufacturing at Contact, they have begun to hire some people back. Benji Barron, the director of operations at Woodgrain said their facility has added back 13 employees since the start of 2012.

While both Woodgrain and Contact have stayed busy lately, neither Horton nor Barron attributed the success to a revitalized housing market. “The market is still tough,” Barron said. “The challenges are still there. We don’t have the volume that we once had, and so it’s a difficult path we are on right now.”
