Portland is again accepting applications for ecoroof incentives.
The incentive program, which pays up to $5 per square foot for new ecoroof projects inside city limits, was launched in 2008. It has so far paid out $2.1 million for 159 projects resulting in the construction of 10 acres in new planted rooftops, according to city officials. The ecoroofs act as a sponge to absorb rainwater and reduce runoff.
Industry watchers say the ecoroof industry is at a “tipping point” with costs to build the systems coming down as the plant-topped roofs become more common.
