Even people who don’t usually feed into lottery frenzy are buying tickets for the $640 million Mega Millions jackpot.

“Right off the bat, people coming in just for those tickets. Friday, it’s just going to be unbelievable,” said Allen Hargis, who owns Pat’s Cigs in Keizer. Hargis said he’s been selling four times more tickets than usual.

The half-billion-dollar prize is the largest lottery jackpot ever, lottery officials say.

Since Tuesday, Mega Millions sales in Oregon have topped $1.4 million, according to data from the Oregon Lottery shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday.
