As Washington transitions to a privatized liquor system, hundreds of state workers face layoffs.

Since November, the agency has taken carefully coordinated steps in a massive layoff process, said Brian Smith, the Liquor Control Board’s communications director. 

“We’re looking at over a thousand people,” Smith said. “These are people with families and mortgage payments and kids in school.” 

Agency officials are looking to downsize staff from about 1,400 employees to roughly 230, said Claris Nnanabu, the LCB’s human resources director.
