Bend-based Epic Aircraft plans to double its staff and transition into the certified airplane market.

And Epic officials say its acquisition this week by a Russian company offers a route to the required certification — and the international customer base that will follow. 

Epic plans to expand its central Oregon headquarters as part of the move, operating as a subsidiary of Engineering LLC, a Russian airplane maintenance company. Its new parent will give it the cash to expand beyond the kit airplanes that it makes now. 

Certification is a crucial step to Epic’s expansion, just two years after it emerged from bankruptcy with its new owners and a longer name, adding the “craft” to Epic Air.
