Lake Oswego City Councilor Bill Tierney announced he had second thoughts on the proposed Portland streetcar connection.

Tierney was the swing vote in a 4-3 split decision by the Lake Oswego City Council last April to move forward with exploring plans for a streetcar. His reversal likely  torpedoes the project for the foreseeable future.

Councilor Jeff Gudman, one of the three council opponents of the streetcar, said after the meeting that the shift means the project is dead. Tierney and others expressed hope that it can be revived later.

“Until we are more united as a city, as a region, and as a city council, I believe we should in the near term, put this project on the shelf,” said Tierney. “Leave it for a future council to examine if they choose to and cease direct expenditures in the foreseeable future.”
