32,183 signatures are required to force a recall vote on Portland Mayor Sam Adams this fall. But with the deadline approaching, campaigners are falling short on support.

Organizer Jasun Wurster sent an e-mail to volunteers on Monday asking them to collect three signatures a day through the end of the month. That may not sound like much, but the campaign claims to have more than 500 volunteers, meaning it is looking for more than 13,500 additional signatures in nine days.

The deadline to submit signatures is Oct. 5. Wurster has not updated the count since announcing that around 10,000 signatures had been collected a month or so ago. “It’s going to be down to the wire,” he says. “It’s not over until it’s over.”
