Lane County pushes for mega-market

Lane County commissioners will consider plans for a year-round farmers’ market and food warehouse at the county fairgrounds, which they hope will help finance the complex,
support local food and create jobs.

Officials said the project could provide a financial boost to the fairgrounds, at 13th and Jefferson streets in Eugene and formally called the Lane Events Center. The center operates at a loss and faces as much as $13 million in costs to improve aging buildings on the 55-acre grounds.

But money could be an obstacle to establishing a year-round farmers’ market there. County Administrator Jeff Spartz said the market would not produce “an overwhelming rate of return,” which means that banks might be loath to provide loans for such a project.
