Oregon’s plastic and rubber manufacturing industry added 1,000 jobs in the past two years, a gain of 17%. Meanwhile, the nation lost about 7,000 jobs in the industry, a loss of 1%. Since 2003, the value of plastic and rubber products exported from Oregon rose 76%, due in part to pneumatic tires, manufactured elsewhere but shipped from Oregon to Mexico, and increased polymer exports. The nation’s plastic and rubber exports gained only 31% and fell behind imports. Most of the products exported from Oregon go to Mexico (42%) and Canada (35%). Since 2003, our plastic and rubber exports to Mexico rose 275%, while those to Canada rose 49%. Oregon companies make a huge assortment of these products, including equipment cases, tubing, high-tech parts, packaging, aircraft and auto parts, window seals, retreaded tires, sheds and enclosures, hot tubs and spas, portable toilets, vinyl windows and doors, and many more standard and custom products.
