Bend ready to spend cash


Bend is expecting $8.5 million in stimulus money, but the funds are flowing in slowly.

Bend is set to begin stimulus-funded projects in water, roads, transit and energy efficiency, but the city may not get the money in time to be used during the construction season.

The money should all be available by the end of the year, but Public Works Director Paul Rheault said some of it might not be put to use until 2010 because the construction season could end before the city is ready to go to work.

Rheault said he wants to get moving quickly on the projects but understands that the state and federal agencies distributing the money are still working some of the bugs out of the system.
