The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs is poised to serve up renewable energy with its $46 million biomass cogeneration project. The project will power 12,000 houses annually, boiling water by burning wood remnants and harnessing the steam energy produced. The project establishes a model of environmental responsibility, allowing tribes to thin trees to maintain low wildfire risk while also producing energy, according to Jim Manion, Warm Springs general manager. Energy Trust of Oregon is investing $5 million in the project, which is set to begin operation by Dec. 31, 2008. The equity partner funding the rest of the project was not disclosed.
